JR's Body Shop

Fool Me Once

JR's Body Shop is a run-down property in Livingston that becomes the setting for a discovery in Maya Stern's search for the missing Tom Douglass. Behind its closed garage bays, rusting car parts, and abandoned vehicles, Douglass had rented a storage unit whose locked door conceals a human arm. The location's neglect makes it more than a backdrop: its obscurity helps explain why Douglass might have chosen it, while its decaying vehicles prompt Maya to connect the scene to her own family memories.

The Property and Its Setting

The body shop is a concrete building painted the yellow of a Ticonderoga pencil, with two garage bay doors shut and padlocks visible from a distance. Its grounds appear long neglected: the grass has not been mowed in a long while, and rusted car parts are scattered around the property. Maya and Corey Rudzinski circle toward the rear, where a graveyard of vehicles blocks their path. The shop sits off Route 10, and the approach reveals no cameras, security, or nearby houses—an unusually isolated setting for a rented storage space.

Among the wrecks, Maya notices a battered, once-white Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera from the mid-nineties. It recalls the same model her father once owned and a family outing: her father turning the corner and honking, her mother getting into the front, and Maya and Claire sliding into the back. Maya wonders whether the wreck could be that very car, though she has no way to know. The vehicle's former promise of newness and family use contrasts with its present place among the discarded cars, a moment of personal memory amid an investigation into Douglass's disappearance.

Douglass's Storage Unit

The connection between the property and Douglass emerges through an unpaid bill. Corey explains that Douglass still uses AOL, does little by email, and has neither read nor sent a message in almost a month. Earlier that day, however, Douglass received an email from Julian Rubinstein about an unpaid bill. Rubinstein rents him a storage shed behind a body shop in Livingston, leading Maya and Corey to JR's Body Shop.

At the site, Maya considers why Douglass would rent there. Corey suggests that his old-fashioned habits might explain the choice, but Maya sees another possibility: a conventional storage facility paid for by check or credit card could have left records among the financial information Corey had searched. The remote shed may have been selected because Douglass did not want anyone to find out about it. The location thus becomes a clue in itself, not merely an address attached to an unpaid bill.

The Locked Door and Discovery

Maya and Corey approach the storage unit after dark. Maya scans the surroundings without turning on a flashlight, noting the absence of cameras, security, and houses. She points out the significance of Douglass choosing such a place. When Corey asks to know what she finds, Maya ends their hesitation by telling him to stay another minute. She gets out of the car; although Corey dislikes the decision, he takes a chain cutter and follows her.

The chain cutter slices through the padlock. As the door flies open, a human arm pops out. Corey recoils at the smell, gagging and stepping back, while Maya remains where she is. The discovery transforms the shed from a concealed storage space into a scene of apparent death. The progression from a routine unpaid-bill email to an isolated property and a body part behind a locked door gives the location its decisive role in the search for Douglass.
